One of the common Cat health problems is stricture colon. In this condition the colon [large intestine] of the cat will have reduced lumen size. This stricture of the colon can be due to infiltration of the inflammatory cells. This infiltration of the cells may be due to injury or the insult of that particular part of the intestine.
The causes for stricture colon in cat
There are so many causes for the cat heath problem stricture colon. This condition may be due to genetics. The nutritional problems can also lead to stricture of the colon. Certain infections and even the immune system abnormalities can result in stricture of colon. In most cases the stricture of the colon may not be disease as such instead this can be mere response to various other problems.
The symptoms of colon stricture
The very common symptom of stricture of the colon is diarrhea. The reason is the part affected is the lower portion of the intestine. In case the upper portion of the intestine is affected vomiting will be more pronounced than diarrhea. There will increase frequency in passing the motion, but the feces voided will be very less each time. at times blood and presence of mucus can be seen in the feces. The stool passed will be very loose. As the result the cat will be depressed and will not eat well. The cat will have fever and loose weight. In some cases the cat will not use their litter box for passing the motion.
The diagnosis of the stricture of colon
There are various ways and means of diagnosing the cat heath problem, stricture colon. History- the long standing diarrhea will suggest that there is some problem in the lower portion of the colon i.e. colon. Physical examination- based on the history of the case, the veterinarians will palpate the thickened portion of the intestine.
Ultra sound and Radiography- radiography is very effective in finding out the stricture of the colon very effectively. Ultra sound technology is also utilized in diagnosis of stricture of colon in cat.
The treatment of cat health problem, stricture colon
The treatment for the stricture of the colon must be based on the causes. In case the cause of the allergic ingredients of the diet, then such ingredients must be identified and eliminated. Incase the stricture is due to some infection the, suitable antibiotics must be attempted. In more severe cases surgical procedures like intestinal anastamosis can also be tried.
